Stevia rebaudiana is native to Paraguay and Brazil. Because stevia contains intensely sweet compounds, it has long been used as a sugar substitute in Japan, China and South America. It does have a bitterness to it too, unlike Xylitol. Living in Delight list it, as it is a useful tool in the diabetic’s arsenal, however with the normal proviso – a lifestyle change that relies less on sweeteners is better than trying to replace sugar.
